Frequently asked questions.
Practical answers on regulations, biosecurity, fuel use, ash, servicing and warranty for AIS Cyclone animal & agricultural incinerators.
Regulations & compliance
Is on-site incineration of fallen stock legal?+
Yes — under the Animal By-Products Regulations (ABPR) you may incinerate fallen stock on-farm in an approved incinerator. The unit must be type-approved to EU Regulation 142/2011 (in the UK, enforced by APHA / DEFRA) and operated to the documented temperatures and burn cycles. AIS Cyclone units are supplied with the required approvals and operating documentation.
What temperature does the incinerator need to reach?+
Approved animal-by-product incinerators must hold the secondary (afterburner) chamber at a minimum of 850°C for at least 2 seconds. AIS Cyclones are built to comfortably exceed this, typically operating between 800–1,100°C in the primary and ≥850°C in the secondary chamber.
Do I need a permit or licence?+
For low-capacity on-farm incineration of your own fallen stock under ABPR, a separate environmental permit is generally not required, but the unit must be APHA-approved and you must keep operating records. Larger commercial throughputs and third-party waste typically require an Environmental Permit. Our compliance team will guide you through it.
What records do I have to keep?+
A simple operating log: date, species/category of material, approximate weight, start/finish times and chamber temperatures achieved. AIS units include digital logging that satisfies APHA / DEFRA inspections out of the box.
Biosecurity & disease control
How does on-site incineration improve biosecurity?+
It contains potentially diseased material on your site and destroys pathogens at high temperature in minutes. You eliminate the disease-transfer risk associated with collection trucks visiting daily or weekly, and you remove the storage period in which pathogens can multiply.
Is incineration better than composting for disease control?+
Yes. Composting relies on slow microbial breakdown over weeks and depends on conditions being maintained throughout the pile. High-temperature incineration destroys pathogens in a single, controlled burn — including bones and resistant tissues — leaving only sterile ash.
Can I incinerate during a notifiable disease outbreak?+
On-site incineration is one of the methods explicitly recognised by APHA for disposal of fallen stock during disease control situations, subject to instructions from the Animal Health authority at the time.
Operation, fuel & ash
What fuel do AIS Cyclone incinerators run on?+
Diesel/red diesel (gas-oil) is the standard option. LPG and natural gas variants are available on request. Burners are Riello, Ecoflam or Elco, depending on capacity and territory.
How much fuel does it use?+
Fuel consumption depends on model and load, but a representative figure for our mid-range Cyclones is 8–14 litres of diesel per hour during the active burn cycle. Once the chamber is hot, the burners modulate and consumption drops considerably.
How long does a burn cycle take?+
A full load typically takes 6–10 hours including pre-heat, burn and cool-down. Smaller loads finish proportionally faster.
What is left after the burn?+
A small quantity of fine, sterile, mineral ash — typically 2–4% of the original mass. It is biologically inert and can be disposed of as agricultural waste in line with local guidance.
How much space does an incinerator need?+
Considerably less than a composting pad. A medium Cyclone needs roughly the footprint of a transit van, plus safe clearance for loading and the flue. We provide a site-plan template with every quote.
Servicing, lifespan & warranty
How long does an AIS incinerator last?+
Properly serviced AIS Cyclones routinely give 15–20+ years of service. The hand-built steel chambers, ceramic-fibre lining and replaceable wear parts are designed for long-term operation.
What servicing is required?+
An annual service covering burner, thermocouples, refractory and door seals is recommended, plus user-level checks before each burn. Servicing can be performed by AIS engineers under contract, or by a trained on-site technician using our spares.
What warranty do you offer?+
Every new AIS Cyclone is supplied with a 3-year warranty as standard, covering the chamber, controls and core components when serviced in line with our schedule.
Can I get spares quickly?+
Yes — we hold UK & US stock of consumables (thermocouples, door seals, refractory, burner parts) for next-day dispatch on most lines. See our Spare Parts Catalog or contact support.
